Fabian Schar says he has “never felt more comfortable in a place” than he does at Newcastle United right now - as reports emerge over a potential new contract.

The Swiss international heads into the summer on the back of another impressive season in black and white, where his centre-back partnership with Sven Botman clinched the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League.

Between the pair, full-backs Kieran Trippier & Dan Burn, and goalkeeper Nick Pope, the Magpies conceded just 33 goals in 38 games and kept 14 clean sheets on the way to securing Champions League qualification.

“For me, it was the best and most beautiful season of my entire career,” Schar told BlueWin in Switzerland.

“I have never felt more comfortable in a place than in Newcastle. The cooperation in the team and with the coaching staff is unprecedented. I feel a great sense of happiness and a lot of gratitude for being able to experience this phase.”

The 31-year-old was heading towards the St James’ Park exit door after falling out of favour under Steve Bruce. However, since the appointment of Eddie Howe, Schar’s fortunes have changed drastically.

Schar was out of contract last summer before earning a new two-year deal. And it’s been reported by Football Insider this week that Newcastle are keen to offer him another deal as a reward for his fine performances.

“He’s (Howe) the best coach of my career,” Schar continued. “It’s difficult to define in just one area. He has so many good facets. His training theory is first class, there is not even a hint of boredom in any meeting.

“What he announces always makes sense. The way he meets me on a personal level suits me extremely well. People are important to him.

“This is an outstanding component for him. He also asks a player on a day off; you can discuss very private matters with him. I’m in a very familiar relationship with him.

“The new owners have invested very carefully and made clever transfers. There was no sign of a spending spree. Instead, some funds have been put into infrastructure. They did a really good job. The change of strategy was necessary.”

Schar’s current deal expires in 2024 but going by what he’s said in this interview, it would appear the defender would be more than happy to once again extend his stay on Tyneside.

The player has made 141 appearances for Newcastle since joining from Deportivo de La Coruna for just £3.5million.
