Eddie Howe revealed his mixed feelings over the midfielder’s departure in his pre-match press conference on Monday morning and Shelvey revealed the advice he took from the United manager before accepting the offer of a two and a half year deal from their Premier League rivals.
He told the Forest website: “I spoke to Eddie Howe and he had such good words to say about Steve Cooper (Forest manager). I previously knew of him from my time at Liverpool, so I knew what a fantastic coach he was, but meeting him for the first time has been a breath of fresh air.
“He’s told me what he expects and the high standards he sets, so I can hope I can come and help the team push to stay in the Premier League. I’ve been in this league a long time, I know what it takes to stay up and what it takes to get a good team to gel, so I’m looking forward to getting started and working with the players that are here.”
Howe paid his own tribute to Shelvey in a statement released on the Magpies website, saying: “Jonjo has been a loyal servant to the club for many years and I want to thank him sincerely for his efforts and commitment during my time here.

“He is a brilliant player who has given so much to the cause, and he leaves with our best wishes for the future.”
Shelvey was not the only last-minute departure confirmed by Newcastle after goalkeeper Karl Darlow moved to Championship club Hull City on loan until the end of the season. The 32-year-old stopper could make his Tigers debut in Saturday’s home game with Cardiff City.
There had been suggestions Darlow’s former club Nottingham Forest were considering a move to take him back to the City Ground - but an anticipated move to Hull has now been completed.
