Newcastle United supporters could not help but keep fixated on Kalvin Phillips throughout Manchester City’s trip to St James’ Park.

The England international provided an interesting sideshow during the 3-2 defeat as Toon chiefs consider an approach in the transfer market to bolster Eddie Howe’s ranks. It is widely reported that City are demanding a hefty loan fee as well as an obligation-to-buy clause for a player yet to start a Premier League game all season.

Before the game, Newcastle fans jokingly asked the visitors to leave the midfielder on Tyneside at the full-time whistle. One social media post read: “Man City just leave Kalvin Phillips at the Milburn stand reception Saturday night please lads.”

Supporters also noticed how Phillips was the last City player to head down the tunnel during the pre-game warm-up. One fan quipped the 28-year-old “probably wanted to wear a Newcastle shirt” while another suggested he was trying to impress Howe in the home dugout.

As the match took place, eagle-eyed spectators noticed Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles enjoying a conversation with Phillips while the two trained on the touchline. One user crowned the skipper as “Agent Jamaal”, insinuating some transfer mischief might have been taking place.

However, feelings towards Phillips soured at the full-time whistle as he could be seen celebrating Kevin De Bruyne’s late winner. While accepting he would still “take” him at Newcastle, one supporter took aim at the midfielder’s post-match festivities.

“Of course, Phillips was celebrating with his team after the game,” the post read. “They employed a cheerleader and he’s just doing his role. I’d still take him not going to lie. We are a Bruno (Guimaraes) injury away from playing (Fabian) Schar in midfield.”
