Newcastle are hoping to sign a defender after missing out on Tosin Adarabioyo

Newcastle United are pushing to sign talented Dutch international Lutsharel Geertruida this summer. The Magpies are keen to bolster their defensive options following long-term injuries to fellow countryman Sven Botman and club captain Jamaal Lascelles who are both unlikely to return to action until the middle of next season at the earliest.

Eddie Howe is close to adding one defensive option in departing Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly. He has been in talks to reunite with his former boss for a number of weeks and there is an expectation the deal will be confirmed in the near future.

But Howe is determined to add at least one more player in that area of the pitch after missing out on Fulham centre back Tosin Adarabioyo, who looks poised for a move to fellow West London side Chelsea on a free transfer after leaving Craven Cottage.

The Magpies have set their sights on Geertruida, who at just 23-years of age has already managed to play 141 times in the Eredivisie with runners-up Feyenoord after making his first team breakthrough in 2017. The young defender has predominantly played as a right back in recent seasons, but has proven he is capable of playing multiple areas, including centre back and defensive midfield - making him ideal for a potential injury crisis.

Geertruida has played under some star-studded football managers in Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, Jaap Staam and ex-Sunderland boss Dick Advocatt, but it is newly appointed Liverpool boss Arne Slot who has worked with the player the longest.

During Slot’s time at the De Kuip stadium, Geertruida formed part of the group that won the Eredivisie title in 2022/23 and the KNVB Cup this term, while also finishing runners-up to AS Roma in the Europa Conference League final in 2021/22.

Last season was Geertruida’s most productive to date in terms of goal contributions and he registered an impressive nine goals and five assists in 47 appearances across all competitions as an attacking minded wing back.

In the last 18 months, Geertruida has won seven caps for the Dutch national team and he remains in contention to make the final squad for Euro 2024 this summer as Ronald Koeman’s side face the likes of France, Austria and Poland in one of the most challenging groups of the competition.

Geertruida is a top target for Newcastle, according to reports from Dutch outlet AD, while Liverpool, West Ham and Tottenham have all showed interest in the Rotterdammer.

Geertruida has been on the radar of Europe's top teams for a number of years. He was very close to joining Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in a £27m deal last summer, but that deal broke down.

However, heading into this summer, he has just one year remaining on his Feyenoord contract, and talks over a new deal are currently stalling, meaning the defender could be available for an even cheaper price next summer as the De Trots van Zuid aim to avoid letting the player leave on a free in 12 months time.
