Newcastle United have been urged to make a move to replace injured goalkeeper Nick Pope during the January transfer window.

The 10-times capped England international is expected to miss the majority of the remainder of the season after he suffered a serious shoulder injury in the 1-0 home win against Manchester United earlier this month.

After undergoing surgery, Pope has watched on from the sidelines as the Magpies have endured something of a torrid run of form. Slovakia international Martin Dubravka has been entrusted with a regular spot in Eddie Howe's starting eleven throughout a run of just one win in seven games in all competitions and has conceded 14 goals during that run.

There have been some suggestions Howe could look to bring in a new goalkeeper to replace Pope and the Magpies have been linked with the likes Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale and Crystal Palace stopper Sam Johnstone.

However, one pundit has suggested free agent David de Gea and Spurs veteran Hugo Lloris should be on Howe's list of priorities when the January transfer window opens for business next week.

Former Spurs and England star Paul Robinson assessed the Magpies’ current situation with their goalkeepers and insisted Lloris and De Gea would be ‘a better option’ than Dubravka and Karius as they continue to experience life without their regular number one.

He told Tottenham News: “As far as Newcastle, yeah it’s a realistic possibility for them with their financial fair play. We know how close to the line they are already.

“So for them to bring in a goalkeeper in January, Eddie Howe has quite cleverly said in the press that he’s looking at the goalkeepers that he’s got, he thinks they’re good enough to carry the situation until Nick Pope gets back.  He’s got to say that because he needs his goalkeepers before January. The two that he’s got in Karius and Dubravka are not at the level that Nick Pope is.

“So you look at the possibility of Hugo Lloris, or David de Gea is another one, those two are both better options than what he’s got, but he’s got to be clever with what he says. For Lloris, if that’s the way that he wants to do that then you’ve got to put into the question his age and his want to play, his drive and passion to still play at the top level, whether that’s in the Premier League, back in France or wherever.

“His personal situation comes into it more than anything because of his age, but Lloris or De Gea is certainly a better option in my opinion than what Newcastle have already got.”
