Kieran Trippier admits his standards have been "nowhere near" when reflecting on Newcastle United's 3-1 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest.

Former Magpies striker Chris Wood netted a hat-trick after Alexander Isak handed the hosts the lead from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute.

Wood equalised on the brink of half-time before completing his 15-minute hat-trick on the hour-mark. Eddie Howe's side have now lost six of their last seven games.

"We were in control in the first half, but it was the transitions that we'd spoken about," Trippier told Amazon Prime, "They have some very quick players and that's where they hurt us.

"We were always in control. They have some very good players on the transition. The most important thing is we regroup and stick together. We have to start the second half of the season strong."

The England international then reflected on his own performances of late and pulled no punches.

Trippier has made errors leading to goals in recent defeats to Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. Against Forest, the 33-year-old played Wood onside for the third goal.

We have been playing two games a week, week after week and some players aren't used to that," Trippier added. "My standards have dropped.

"I'm old enough to speak about myself and my standards have been nowhere near. I've faced enough setbacks in my career to know I can bounce back."

United, having exited both the Champions League and Carabao Cup this month, could slip to ninth in the Premier League table before the New Year's Day trip to Liverpool with Manchester United and Brighton still to play.
