Newcastle United’s interest in Robin Gosens has been shrugged off by a director of his current club.

The Magpies had been linked with a move for the German international, and were reportedly prepared to treble his wages in order to lure him to St James’ Park.

Gosens, who plays on the left flank, is currently out injured and isn’t expected to return until February.

But that didn’t stop the speculation, with Eddie Howe keen to strengthen his ranks before the window closes on January 3 - having already signed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

However, Atalanta - where Gosens currently plies his trade - have played down the interest from Tyneside.

Director Umberto Marino was quizzed on the speculation and offered a tongue in cheek response.

“I read stories of Newcastle interest in a different Atalanta player every day,” he said, speaking to DAZN.

“It’s like bingo to see who comes up next!

“Robin has been out of action for four months. We miss him as a player and also a person, as he is one of the leaders of this squad, and we hope he returns as soon as possible.”
