A long month has come to a close and 11pm on Tuesday night marked the end of the January transfer window.

Twelve months ago, Newcastle United’s PIF-led ownership completed a transformative four weeks as the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Tripper and Dan Burn joined Eddie Howe’s squad and began a run of form that helped the Magpies preserve their Premier League status.

More eye-catching moves following during the summer transfer window as United’s squad was further enhanced by the additions of goalkeeper Nick Pope, Dutch defender Sven Botman and the club record signing of Real Sociedad and Sweden striker Alexander Isak.

A measured approach has been implemented during the last month as United’s recruitment team reignited their interest in some long-term targets, despite speculation linking the Magpies will a whole host of weird and wonderful names.
