Callum Wilson has named his Newcastle United Player of the Season so far, and it's not either Kieran Trippier or Miguel Almiron.

Full-back Trippier and winger Almiron have turned heads so far this season as two players leading Newcastle's charge for the European spots in the Premier League.

Captain Trippier's commanding displays at the back combined with some stunning set-piece assists and goals have marked him out as the crème de la crème of this exciting Newcastle team.

Meanwhile, Paraguayan Almiron has played out of his skin this term after years of inconsistency on Tyneside. The forward put together a purple patch of eight goals in nine appearances to help the Magpies to their lofty league position.

However, when speaking on the BBC Sounds' Footballer's Football Podcast, it was the side's man between the sticks that Callum Wilson named as his top player so far this season.

Speaking about Nick Pope, Wilson said: "Nick is a top lad, a really nice guy. I'm so happy for him. He's keeping clean sheets, getting records for himself.

"We want him to get the Golden Glove, that's something that'll probably be in his mind. And as a team, with the defence doing so well, the team are buzzing off of clean sheets. That's the mentality.

"I think it's nine clean sheets in a row now which is unbelievable. We've got the most in the top five leagues I think, the boys at the back deserve a special mention. I'd say Nick has been our Player of the Season so far this year. He's kept us in games when we needed him."

Pope is currently in pole position for the Golden Glove accolade with 12 Premier League clean sheets to his name. The Magpies man's nearest competitor is Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale, currently with nine shutouts, followed by Manchester United and Manchester City stars David de Gea and Ederson who both have eight clean sheets to their name.
