Hide AdDuring the opening three seasons of his Magpies’ career, Schar battled Premier League relegation and looked to be heading towards the exit door after falling out of favour under Steve Bruce at the start of the 2021-22 campaign.
However, the appointment of Eddie Howe in November 2021 has overseen an incredible transformation. Schar has been a regular under the former Bournemouth boss and played a key role as Newcastle have rapidly progressed from relegation candidate to beating Paris Saint-Germain on the Champions League stage.
Schar is out of contract this summer but is set to remain at the club amid reports that there is an option for a one-year extension. And the 31-year-old is keen on the idea of finishing his career at Newcastle.

“There was a time when I was thinking about what could happen [leaving]. I was in a difficult situation, I did not know if the club was still there for me, that they still want me. But as soon as the new manager came in, I thought ‘this is my chance’. Since then everything has changed.
“Probably not, no, to be honest. At that stage, I wouldn’t even think about it [playing in the Champions League]. We were in a different stage. I played the first three or four years at Newcastle we were fighting relegation, which is very different. This makes it even better to still be at this club that I love.

Newcastle face Borussia Dortmund this evening where Schar will line up in the centre of defence alongside Jamaal Lascelles.
