Newcastle United will be without key midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for next Saturday’s Premier League trip to AFC Bournemouth after the Brazilian picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Arsenal.

In a heated encounter at St James’ Park, which the Magpies won 1-0 courtesy of Anthony Gordon’s controversial winner, Guimaraes was booked in the 88th minute for a push on Fabio Viera. As per Premier League rules, any player who receives five cautions within the opening 20 games must serve a one-match suspension.

The 25-year-old remains eligible to feature in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League clash away to Borussia Dortmund before being forced to sit out of the visit to the South Coast at the weekend.

“I was frustrated, not so much with Bruno but with the decision,” said Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe. “In my opinion, Bruno is ahead of the player and he gets booked. I’ll have to see it again but my natural reaction was it wasn’t a booking.

“I think there were a lot of needless yellow cards today and with very few players available we can’t pick up suspensions. To lose Bruno for any game is a blow for us but we’ll have to deal with it.”

After Bournemouth, United aren’t back in league action until they host Chelsea on November 25 due to the two-week international break, where Guimaraes is likely to be called up by Brazil for World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina.

Newcastle are already without a number of key players. Alexander Isak, Elliot Anderson, Sven Botman, Matt Targett, Harvey Barnes and Javier Manquillo are out injured, while Sandro Tonali is suspended for 10 months.

Howe is also awaiting further updates on Dan Burn (back) and Jacob Murphy (shoulder) after they were forced off against Arsenal.
