Newcastle United are hopeful of negotiating a new deal for talisman Kieran Trippier this summer, according to reports.

Currently injured, the 33-year-old has been an instrumental figure for the Magpies in recent times. Trippier was the first player to take the leap of faith and join Newcastle following the Saudi-backed takeover.

He has worn the armband for most of his time on Tyneside, with club captain Jamaal Lascelles struggling to displace Dan Burn, Sven Botman or Fabian Schar in the starting line-up. As it stands, a contract extension signed 15 months ago means Trippier is set to leave at the end of next season.

The right-back will be approaching 35 and nearing the end of an eventful career when his current deal expires. Football Insider claim Toon chiefs want Trippier to extend his deal further and see out the rest of his playing days at St James’ Park.

Joelinton penned a bumper extension last week and Trippier is the next man Eddie Howe wants to commit his future to Newcastle. There was speculation linking him with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in January.

Thomas Tuchel was keen to bolster his English contingent but the Bavarian outfit saw two bids rejected. Trippier called the interest “a compliment” but outlined his desire to succeed at Newcastle.

“It’s always a compliment when a team like Bayern comes in for you, but I want to make history with the club, win a trophy and help the club grow for as long as possible,” he said. “I hope everybody knows my commitment to this club. It has not changed since I first arrived.

“It’s a transfer window, things happen, it’s not put me off or anything. I’m at Newcastle. Things happen in the background. I've been quiet but not thrown my toys out of the pram or anything.

“I had loads of conversations with the manager, everything was positive, nothing has changed and I’m committed to Newcastle. I want to give everything for the club.”
