Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier & Joelinton update as Newcastle United face late call vs Sheffield United

Eddie Howe has provided an injury update on his Newcastle United squad ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash at home to Sheffield United (kick-off 3pm).

The Magpies’ boss has confirmed Kieran Trippier, Joelinton, Nick Pope and Miguel Almiron are “getting closer” to a return but won’t feature against the Blades. Almiron is nearest to returning with the Paraguayan expected to be “there or thereabouts” for next week’s trip to Burnley.

“They’re getting closer but not close enough for this match,” said Howe. “All are in different positions, it’s difficult to bracket them as one.

“Nick is beginning to start his early training sessions with us, but still hasn’t participated in a big group session yet but is starting to be with the outfield players in different shooting drills, so he’s getting closer.

“Joelinton has been to visit a specialist recently and had good news on his comeback. He’ll continue to do more. And Miggy is there or thereabouts so we’ll hopeful for maybe next week.

“Kieran, we hope he’ll be back soon but not for this game.”

It means Newcastle will remain without 10 players against Sheffield United with a late decision set to be made on Tino Livramento. The right-back was named on the bench during the 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, despite carrying an ankle injury.

Howe said: “He came on against Tottenham and had a slight reaction to his ankle after that game, minimal but enough to then restrict his training before Crystal Palace. Similar situation we have been in with a number of players, we’re having to look after him.

“Now, a few days makes a big difference. Let’s see how he feels today, how gets through training and then we’ll make a decision regarding this game.”
