Former Newcastle United transfer target Hugo Ekitike is having to bide his time at Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite a long-standing interest from the Magpies, the France Under-21 international opted against a move to Tyneside this summer after deciding to join the Ligue 1 giants on a season-long loan from Reims.

That deal will reportedly be converted into a £30million permanent move next summer - but Ekitike has had little time to impress at the Parc des Princes during the opening month of the season.

All five of the forward’s appearances have come as a substitute in Ligue 1 fixtures and he is yet to find game-time in Champions League group stage fixtures against Juventus and Maccabi Haifa.

Despite seeing him opportunities limited by the form of star trio Kylian Mbappé, Neymar and Lionel Messi, there still remain high hopes Ekitike can fulfil his potential and prove his worth with the reigning league champions.

“Hugo is a player with incredible potential,” PSG head coach Christophe Galtier told L’Equipe.

“He is discovering the highest level. He needs some sessions to find the right level and to create a connection with the attacking unit. He is progressing enormously and is very good in training.

“He is dying to get going.

“The good times will come very quickly, and he will have lots more game time very soon.”

Ekitike will hope to get more game-time when PSG visit Lyon on Sunday night.
