Max Kilman is undergoing his medical ahead of joining West Ham United in a £40million transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Daily Telegraph claimed last month that Newcastle United had offered Elliot Anderson and a cash sum for Kilman, which was rejected by Wolves.

Eddie Howe’s side didn’t return with a second bid with Anderson going on to join Nottingham Forest for £35million. The academy graduate departure was forced after the Magpies needed to raise funds to avoid breaching Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Yankuba Minteh also left for Brighton & Hove Albion having not kicked a ball in black and white. The Gambian joined from Danish side Odense Boldklub last summer before spending the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Feyenoord.

After appointing Paul Mitchell as sporting director, Newcastle are assessing their next move in the transfer market. And in the meantime, West Ham have swooped in for Kilman. The centre-back, also linked with Manchester United, was a top target for new manager Julen Lopetegui.

Kilman joined Wolves from non-league side Maidenhead United for £400,000 back in 2018 and has gone to make over 150 appearances. Maidenhead will receive £4m for the transfer after inserting a sell-on clause.

Newcastle’s interest in Kilman caught some supporters by surprise. The 27-year-old is a left-footed centre-back, a position there is plenty of depth in with new signing Lloyd Kelly, Dan Burn and Sven Botman - when he returns from an ACL injury later this year.
