It's the news Newcastle United and Sam Fender fans have all been waiting for as the singer announces a mega homecoming shows at St. James' Park.

The North Shields star will play to over 50,000 people on Tyneside with a headline set at the cathedral on the hill on Friday, June 9 - a date that of course coincides with the Blaydon Races in true Geordie fashion.

It will be Fender's biggest ever headline show, eclipsing the 50,000 people that attendedFinsbury Park - Crowd praise the ‘unreal’ night for local hero"> this summer's set at Finsbury Park.

It's set to be an iconic evening on Tyneside with fans making a pilgrimage to the stadium to see the local lad singing hit tracks all about life in the North East.

Fender played an emotional two nights at the Utilita Arena earlier this year, playing to around 20,000 people - now that number will more than double. There’s set to not be a dry eye in sight at the iconic stadium.

The 'Seventeen Going Under' singer confirmed the news today after a long week of teaser posts. He was also spotted filming promotional material at the stadium by a Newcastle United fan enjoying a stadium tour.

He said: “Ever since I started this band, I always used to joke with the boys that one day we might play St James' Park in Newcastle. It's a childhood dream come true, and we're actually gonna play it on the 9th June. This is literally gonna be the biggest show we've ever done - our first stadium show, which is so weird to say! I can't wait, it's gonna be absolutely lush and I hope to see yas all there.”

Support comes from Inhaler and Holly Humberstone.

Last month, in an interview with Grammy.com, Fender said: "Everything in the UK is f—ing skyrocketing at the moment in terms of our career. We're doing a f—ing huge headline show at home which we're gonna announce really soon, like 50,000 people. The reason why I was talking about this — I wasn't just outright bragging — is because it’s really humbling to come over here when nobody f—ing knows who we are."

The Brit Award winner is, of course, a mammoth Newcastle United fan, regularly playing sets in the famous black and white jersey and sharing clips of him enjoying matches.

The star was also spotted celebrating with fans when the takeover went through last year - famously turning up to BBC Breakfast a little bit worse for wear the morning after.
