Burnley boss Sean Dyche had no complaints over Callum Wilson’s opener for Newcastle United.

Wilson’s sixth goal of the season on 40 minutes earned Eddie Howe’s side their first victory this term at the 15th attempt.

The Clarets players appealed for a foul on Nick Pope when he spilled Joe Willock’s cross under Fabian Schar’s presence before Wilson fired home.

VAR checked the goal and agreed with referee Paul Tierney’s on-field decision.

The 1-0 scoreline saw United move off the bottom of the Premier League table and also record their first clean sheet.

What Sean Dyche said about Wilson’s opener

Dyche said: “At the time you think it is a possible foul but having looked at it after the game, it is a clumsy challenge but not necessarily a bad challenge.

“It just bounced out of Pope’s hands after he took it so well. Their player reacted quickly and it was a good finish.

“Some of the quality was really pleasing but goals change the feeling of games, not just the scoreline, and I felt it did for them.

“It gave them something to fight for and hang onto and changed the feel in the stadium and crowd because they looked really nervous first-half and we didn’t.”
