“It’s a group that wants to be remembered.”

Ahead of Newcastle United’s away game at Brenford, Sean Longstaff and Jacob Murphy sat down with the club to talk about the team’s progress and their chance to play Champions League football next season.

The pair spoke about their love for the club, what it’s like to be a supporter and a player and how it intensifies your role in the squad.

But the midfielders also looked beyond this season and next. They spoke about their desire and drive to be remembered- for this team to be spoke about for years to come. Just as Longstaff remembers the 2002/03 squad and their home win over Juventus.

When asked about playing a such a big role in his boyhood club at this particular moment, Murphy said:

“It’s really good because you look back at previous teams that had success and they’re spoken about so highly and slowly but surely I feel like this group is going to spoke about for many years to come, hopefully, in such a positive way.

“And to be part is that group is amazing and I didn’t really think at a point in my Newcastle career a few years ago that we’d be in this position and there would be such a great buzz around us. I’m delighted I’m around it and that I play my part in it.”

When asked about Newcastle’s desire for a Champions League place next season, Longstaff built on Murphy’s claim this squad want to be remembered.

He said: “It’s funny actually, I always go back to this DVD- the 2003/2003 Flying High video to see the games where they beat Juventus at home 1-0, the atmosphere was just something totally different.

“And you see when they went to Milan and you see how many away fans they took and you used to watch that and think it was just so special and you never thought you’d get the chance to get the club back there.

“Just to think that every mid-week that’s what the atmosphere could be like is just something that gives you a buzz to try and get back there and like I said before, the fact that we’ve got a really really good chance of achieving that is something we can’t take for granted.

“Hopefully it’s something we can’t let pass by because, like Murph said, it’s a group that wants to be remembered and nobody thought this group would be the one to take us to special places so I think it’s an added incentive for us to try and achieve that.”
