Newcastle United have made a lucrative offer to Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar - according to reports in Italy.

The Slovakian international has become a key player with the Nerazzurri after moving to the San Siro in a £28m deal from Serie A rivals Sampdoria during the summer of 2017. Since making that switch, Skriniar has helped Inter win the Serie A title, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italia, and was part of the side beaten by Sevilla in the Europa League Final in 2020.

He has made over 230 appearances in all competitions but there has been speculation the current season could be his last with the club as he prepares to enter the final six months of his current contract. That would mean the 27-year-old can negotiate a pre-contract agreement with a club outside of Italy from January and make a free transfer move at the end of the season.

Skriniar revealed his belief that he will extend his time at the San Siro earlier this season in an interview with Sporty, saying: “I think I’m gonna stay at Inter. My current contract runs out in June 2023 but I feel Inter will offer me a new deal as they’re happy with my performances. I think I’m gonna sign a new deal and stay.”

But a recent report in Italy has suggested Skriniar is ‘ready to leave’ Inter, with CalcioMercato stating Newcastle have made the powerful centre-back their ‘first goal’ in the transfer window as they look to ‘bring several great champions’ to the club. There was a warning issued with the suggestion that Skriniar will only consider a move to Tyneside if the Magpies can continue their impressive start to the Premier League season and secure a return to the Champions League after a 20-year absence.

United are not the only Premier League club keen on a move for Skriniar, with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur all said to have an interest in the defender.
