Newcastle United star Elliot Anderson was hit by what appeared to be a plastic bottle during the impressive 8-0 win over Sheffield United.

Little could dampen lofty Newcastle United spirits following a historic 8-0 win against Sheffield United on Sunday but one frustrating takeaway for football fans was the sight of a projectile from the crowd hitting midfielder Elliot Anderson in the first half.

Eddie Howe's side were in scintillating form as Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn, Sven Botman, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almiron, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak all hit the back of the net at Bramall Lane to jumpstart the side's Premier League season.

It was a day to forget for the newly-promoted Blades, who are now also under FA investigation for the behaviour of a home supporter during the fixture.

As Newcastle United players celebrated the side's third goal, headed in by centre-back Botman, Sheffield United supporters thew objects onto the pitch. One of these projectiles, believed to be a plastic bottle, clobbered 20-year-old Anderson on the foot as he celebrated.

On-field captain Kieran Trippier tried to diffuse the situation by encouraging teammates to move away from the corner and out of firing range. Anderson was able to continue and complete the full match without any apparent problems.

Speaking after the game, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “Elliot hasn’t spoken to me but I did see things thrown from the stand which isn’t what we want to see.

“My thought initially was just for the welfare of the players and hopefully everyone has come through okay.”

Following the incident at Bramall Lane, Sheffield United could now face an FA charge for breaching rule E21.2. The football authority's ruling states: “Failing to ensure that spectators and/or its supporters (and anyone purporting to be its supporters or followers) conduct themselves in an orderly fashion whilst attending any match and do not throw missiles or other potentially harmful or dangerous objects at or on to the pitch.”
