Blackburn Rovers director of football Gregg Broughton has insisted the Championship club will only sell Newcastle United target Adam Wharton if they receive ‘something unbelievable’ during the summer transfer window.

This weekend marks the first anniversary of the young midfielder putting pen to paper on his first professional contract and he has gone on to make significant progress over the last 12 months. After making his senior debut in a Carabao Cup win against Hartlepool United in August, the 18-year-old has established himself as a key part of a Rovers side managed by former Magpies forward Jon Dahl Tomasson.

His form in the heart of the Rovers midfield has attracted attention from elsewhere, with the likes of Newcastle, West Ham United and Liverpool all said to be keeping a keen eye on his development at Ewood Park. Wharton penned a five year deal when he agreed to turn professional with Rovers and Broughton has revealed there will be discussions with the youngster over what could lie ahead in his future.

He told Lancs Live: “Adam has done brilliant, we gave him a five-year contract and he has four years left.

“He has really taken on board the messages that have been given to him by the coaches and that was reflected in his performances at the back end of the season. At the beginning of the year, we wanted to bring Tyler (Morton) in and allow Jake (Garrett) and Adam six to eight games in order so they wouldn’t be left when Tyler goes back to Liverpool. Adam has smashed that now, he is on more than double and he has done that brilliantly.

“He is on a long-term contract, he is happy here and he is a Blackburn boy through and through. Ultimately, we have to be a player-trading club but it is now up to us, in communication with the player, to decide when is the right time for that player to move. It would take something unbelievable for that to happen this summer with Adam.”
