Joselu bagged more goals in three minutes for Real Madrid than he managed during his last nine months at Newcastle United

Newcastle United supporters were left stunned after former flop Joselu dragged Real Madrid into the Champions League final.

Few Toon fans could have tipped the Spaniard for greatness when he left St James’ Park to join Alaves five years ago. Joselu bagged just seven goals in 52 games on Tyneside and was viewed as one of Rafa Benitez’s worst signings.

Newcastle were shopping around in the bargain basement for a striker following their Premier League return in 2017. Benitez cut a £5million deal with Stoke City but Joselu failed to impress in two seasons.

He was shipped out to La Liga for half that transfer fee and has since rebuilt his career. The 34-year-old is now a proven scorer in his home country, earning 10 caps for Spain and earning a shock loan move to Real Madrid last summer.

While Joselu, lacking the glitz and glamour of his Los Blancos teammates, has endured criticism, his dreams turned into reality with a stunning brace against Bayern Munich. With Madrid down and out on 88 minutes, the ex-Newcastle man bagged twice to rescue the 14-time champions - booking them a showpiece final at Wembley next month.

Toon supporters could not believe their eyes at Joselu’s heroics on social media. One posted: “The man who scored 11 goals for Stoke & NUFC in three years, has come off the bench & scored a brace to send Real Madrid into the final of the Champions League. The game has gone!”

Another comment read: “Imagine waking up from a seven-year coma today and seeing Joselu save Real Madrid in the Champions League!”
