Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson lamented one transfer market decision made by the club in January on a recent podcast.

The talisman, who found the back of the net in a 1-1 draw with West Ham last weekend, spoke on last week's episode of BBC Sounds' The Footballer's Football Podcast and reviewed Newcastle's business in the January window.

Wilson spoke highly of Anthony Gordon, labelling the former Everton man a 'top player', and shared his confidence in who was around him in the dressing room at St. James' Park.

Despite his praise, there was one piece of transfer market business that Wilson said was 'unfortunate' when speaking to West Ham United striker Michail Antonio and presenter Rickie Haywood-Williams.

The Magpies striker said: "We, unfortunately, let Jonjo Shelvey go, who I think is an unbelievable ball-playing midfield. He's had his injuries and not really been fit. It's crazy.

"He's a strikers' dream. You know when you make a run and you know he's going to find that ball. He's one of them kind of players but things change, people go in different directions. It was probably an opportunity he couldn't turn down so good luck to him."

Rickie, who is a Liverpool fan, also chimed in with praise for Shelvey. He said: "We had him at Liverpool a few years back and was gutted when he left. You knew he was going to develop into a proper ball-playing midfielder."

Shelvey joined Nottingham Forest on the last day of the transfer window, putting pen to paper on a two and half year deal. The former Magpie was given a send-off at last week's Carabao Cup fixture at St. James' Park.

After signing, Shelvey told the Forest website: “It’s a pleasure to be here. As soon as I found out Forest were interested, it caught my eye straight away and I just couldn’t wait to get down here. It’s a fantastic football club that has so much history and I’m really looking forward to getting started.

“My main goal straight away is to fight for my place in the team and stay there. It’s not going to be easy because there’s a lot of competition for places, but it’s a challenge I’m really looking forward to and the competitiveness can only help the team going forward.

“I spoke to Eddie Howe and he had such good words to say about Steve Cooper. I previously knew of him from my time at Liverpool, so I knew what a fantastic coach he was, but meeting him for the first time has been a breath of fresh air.

“He’s told me what he expects and the high standards he sets, so I can hope I can come and help the team push to stay in the Premier League. I’ve been in this league a long time, I know what it takes to stay up and what it takes to get a good team to gel, so I’m looking forward to getting started and working with the players that are here.”
