Top of the priority list is a central defender, with the Magpies left frustrated in their efforts to sign Lille’s Sven Botman and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos.
Beyond that, Eddie Howe’s side are also looking to sign a central midfielder, while a left-back and striker could be brought in if the right deal emerges.
As well as incomings, there is expected to be outgoings with Howe needing to make space in his 25-man Premier League squad.
Indeed, at least two players will be removed with Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood already through the door at St James’ Park.
And ahead of deadline day on Monday, NewcastleWorld, using some of the names to be linked most recently, takes a look at the deals that COULD happen before the window slams shut at 11pm:

. IN: Jesse Lingard
A complicated deal to do, but it isn’t through lack of trying on Newcastle’s behalf. The player is open to a loan move, but Manchester United aren’t with Lingard out of contract in the summer. Talks are continuing. Let’s wait and see. Photo: Dan Mullan
. OUT: Freddie Woodman
Woodman was on the verge of signing for Bournemouth on a season-long loan in the summer before United’s goalkeeping crisis unfolded in pre-season. Now that situation has eased, don’t rule out a Championship loan - or maybe even a permanent exit - this month. Photo: George Wood
. IN: Dele Alli
Alli’s career has stalled at Spurs, so both the club and the player are keen to agree on a temporary exit this January. Newcastle have registered an interest. Interestingly, Alli shares the same agency as new signings Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood. Photo: Alex Davidson

4. OUT: Elliot Anderson
Luton Town-linked Anderson was left out of the trip to Saudi Arabia and featured for the under-23s on Monday night. While the midfielder has been in-and-around Howe’s first-team, he’s lacked any sort of game time. An EFL loan, on paper, makes a lot of sense. Photo: George Wood
