Top of the priority list is a central defender, with the Magpies left frustrated in their efforts to sign Lille’s Sven Botman and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos.
Beyond that, Eddie Howe’s side are also looking to sign a central midfielder, while a left-back and striker could be brought in if the right deal emerges.
As well as incomings, there is expected to be outgoings with Howe needing to make space in his 25-man Premier League squad.
Indeed, at least two players will be removed with Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood already through the door at St James’ Park.
And ahead of deadline day on Monday, NewcastleWorld, using some of the names to be linked most recently, takes a look at the deals that COULD happen before the window slams shut at 11pm:

5. IN: Aaron Ramsey
Credit to the Daily Telegraph for this one. Newcastle have reportedly “put out feelers” to see if the Wales international would be open to a move to Tyneside. Ramsey is keen on a Premier League return, and Juventus are equally keen to offload him. Photo: Catherine Ivill
6. OUT: Miguel Almiron
In a season of struggle for Newcastle, Almiron has perhaps been the most underwhelming. His vocal agent Daniel Campos has once again been speaking this week, saying his client's future will be assessed at the end of the season. But if a suitable offer was to arrive now, would United say no? The Paraguayan has started just three games under Howe. Photo: Stu Forster
7. IN: Diego Carlos
There are fresh suggestions that Newcastle are ready to walk away from the Carlos deal with Sevilla regularly moving the goalposts. If the La Liga club do lower their valuation, a deal might still happen. Certainly, the player wants it. Could go to the wire. Photo: Fran Santiago
8. OUT: Federico Fernandez
There aren’t many, if at all anyone, who would want to see Fernandez leave this month. But if a new central defender arrives, one probably has to leave. Unfortunately for the Argentine, he’s played the least amount of games out of United’s central defensive pack this term. Photo: Stu Forster
