Top of the priority list is a central defender, with the Magpies left frustrated in their efforts to sign Lille’s Sven Botman and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos.
Beyond that, Eddie Howe’s side are also looking to sign a central midfielder, while a left-back and striker could be brought in if the right deal emerges.
As well as incomings, there is expected to be outgoings with Howe needing to make space in his 25-man Premier League squad.
Indeed, at least two players will be removed with Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood already through the door at St James’ Park.
And ahead of deadline day on Monday, NewcastleWorld, using some of the names to be linked most recently, takes a look at the deals that COULD happen before the window slams shut at 11pm:

9. IN: Nikola Milenkovic
NewcastleWorld exclusively revealed United had been offered the chance to sign the Serb after their failed attempt to land Sven Botman. If the club’s centre-back frustrations continue, then a deal for Milenkovic could well be explored further. Photo: Alessandro Sabattini
10. OUT: Jeff Hendrick
Just hasn’t worked out for him on Tyneside. And any hope of a fresh start under a new head coach hasn’t happened, with the Republic of Ireland international playing just 10 minutes under Howe in total. Photo: Naomi Baker
11. IN: Todd Cantwell
Cantwell is a name that has been discussed among United’s transfer officials, albeit he is not a priority. He’s struggled with injuries at Norwich this season - hampering his development - and new boss Dean Smith keeps overlooking the 23-year-old. Photo: Harriet Lander
12. OUT: Matty Longstaff
Recalled from his loan spell at Aberdeen, Longstaff is a long way off from recapturing the form he showed on his debut against Manchester United to break into Howe’s first-team plans. A loan move is likely, whether that be to the Championship or League One. Photo: Catherine Ivill
