The 33-year-old started and played a full 90 minutes as the Magpies beat League Two side Bromley on Sunday to advance into the fourth round of the FA Cup.
With Sven Botman back fit and starring in recent wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, head coach Eddie Howe faced the difficult decision of deciding between the Dutchman and Schar at right-sided centre-back.

Why is Fabian Schar missing for Newcastle against Wolves?
However, it appears the decision was made for Howe. Botman starts alongside Dan Burn at the heart of defence, while Schar isn’t in the squad because of illness.
Schar’s last Premier League appearance came on December 30 when Newcastle won 3-1 at Manchester United. He was booked in the latter stages of tie, meaning he was suspended for the visit to Spurs, as well as the trip to Arsenal a few days later.
The former Switzerland international has 21 starts for Howe’s side this campaign.
Meanwhile, the Magpies welcome back Alexander Isak, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock into the squad after they were rested at the weekend.

Emil Krafth is also back with the team following two months out with broken collarbone. Callum Wilson (hamstring), Jamaal Lascelles (ACL), Harvey Barnes (thigh) and Nick Pope (knee) remain sidelined.
