Callum Wilson has hailed Newcastle United teammate Bruno Guimaraes as a “superstar” following his standout display in Saturday’s 5-1 win over Brentford.

The Brazilian has been the talk of Tyneside, and perhaps the wider media, this week after he capped off a dominant midfield display with two goals against the Bees.

Guimaraes opened the scoring after heading home Kieran Trippier’s cross before making it 3-1 with a strike that beat David Raya from distance.

The 24-year-old was given a standing ovation by the St James’ Park crowd and Eddie Howe admitted afterwards that United had landed themselves a £35million bargain.

Guimaraes only joined the club from Lyon in January but is already featuring in conversations about Newcastle’s greatest-ever midfielder.

Wilson has also been wowed by Guimaraes and praised him and Sven Botman - signed for £35m from Lille in the summer - for how quickly they’ve settled into life on Tyneside.

‘Bruno is a superstar’

“When he first joined, it took him a few weeks to settle,” Wilson told BBC 5 Live’s Monday Night Club. “It was a new team, new league, new environment and a new area. The North East isn’t the ideal place to move to from a foreign country with the wind and the cold up there but you soon get used to it!

“He’s settled in. He’s got broken English but he’s an English person if you know what I mean with his banter and the way he is around the dressing room. He has a laugh, he’s friendly and overall he’s an unbelievable football player.

“Him and Sven Botman, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by - two young players that have come into the football club. They’re real talents and have a long career in the game.

“His numbers are speaking for themselves, he was fantastic at the weekend. But it wasn’t just about his goals, he’s added that to his game, he’s even scored headers.

“The way he gets on the ball and flicks it around players, it’s like he’s in the playground with friends. He’s definitely a talent and a superstar.”

Guimaraes, who wasn’t necessarily signed to score goals, has scored seven in just 17 starts, which has already caught the attention of 14-time European champions Real Madrid.
