The six players set to leave Newcastle United this summer as £20m deal agreed

The players set to leave Newcastle United this summer - as it stands.

Newcastle United have handed a new one-year contract to defender Fabian Schar.

Schar’s current deal was due to expire this summer but talks between the player’s representatives and the club have been ongoing for a while. Those have now reached a successful conclusion with the agreement made official on Thursday.

The 33-year-old remains under contract at St James’ Park until the end of the 2025-26 season.

“I'm buzzing to extend my stay here. It's been a very good few weeks for everybody at Newcastle United after winning the Carabao Cup and I'm really happy now to sign another contract with this amazing club,” said Schar.

"It's my seventh season here and everybody knows how happy I am at the club and how comfortable I feel in the city, so I'm really glad to be continuing that. Now it's about looking forward and finishing the season as strong as possible."

Next season will be the former Switzerland international’s eighth at St James’ Park. After joining for just £3million from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018, he is regarded as one of the Magpies’ best bargains in the Premier League era.

Schar has gone on to make 221 appearances, over half of which have come since Eddie Howe was appointed as head coach in November 2021. He has scored some iconic goals too, including the strike that wrapped up United’s 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last season.

"Fabian has been outstanding in my time at the club,” said Howe. “As well as his performances on the pitch, he has shown a fantastic attitude in the group. He has been the heartbeat of the club's season so far, and he'll continue to be a key player for us as we strive to finish as high in the table as possible."

There are still a handful of players whose contracts are due to expire in the comings. Here, NewcastleWorld takes a look at the players set to leave - as it stands:

Jamaal Lascelles - out of contract

Club captain Lascelles has been at Newcastle for the past nine seasons but there’s chance this could be his last. The 31-year-old hasn’t played for 12 months due to an ACL injury.

Callum Wilson - out of contract

With 49 goals in 121 appearances since joining from Bournemouth in 2020, there is no doubting Wilson’s ability. However, his injury record has been a real frustration, leaving Newcastle with a tough decision to make regarding a new deal this summer.

John Ruddy - out of contract

The 38-year-old is fourth choice goalkeeper at Newcastle after joining on a free transfer from Birmingham City last summer.

Mark Gillespie - out of contract

Gillespie hasn’t made a competitive first-team appearance in almost five years but is recognised as an important member of the squad by head coach Eddie Howe.

Jamal Lewis - out of contract

Lewis spent the first-half of the campaign on loan at Brazilian giants Sao Paulo before returning in January with an ankle injury. He last made a competitive first-team appearance in May 2023.

Kelly is currently on loan at Juventus, a move that is expected to become permanent in the summer as there is a £20million obligation to buy.
