Howe was Redknapp’s first signing as Portsmouth’s head coach in 2002, however a knee injury meant he only played two games under him.

Redknapp said: “He’s done fantastic there, Eddie, done a great job.

“I mean, it’s a marvellous club, Newcastle. Them fans, they live for that club. 50,000 every week- they deserve some success.

They’ve had nothing over the years.”

The former England manager was offered the top job at Newcastle in 2008 but, after some consideration, ultimately decided to stay at Portsmouth.

“They will win trophies in the next few years, for sure. They’re only going to get stronger,” Redknapp continued.

“They’re great fans.”
