Eddie Howe has told Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall what they must do to break into Newcastle United’s starting XI on a regular basis.

Livramento joined from Southampton for a reported £35million in the summer, while Hall’s move from Chelsea will become permanent at the end of the campaign for an initial £28m.

Despite committing £63m to sign both English full-backs, their only start so far came in the 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the previous round of the Carabao Cup.

The pair are expected to start tomorrow’s fourth round clash away to Manchester United and Howe has challenged them to grasp their opportunities.

“When they get an opportunity they have to take it, and that really is their only way of approaching the position they’re in,” Howe told NewcastleWorld.

“Tino, when you look back to the Manchester City game, did. I thought he was outstanding and he’s come on in a couple of games recently and again I think he’s done well. He’s a player we really like and it’s the same for Lewis.

“He started the Manchester City game and it was a difficult first half for us and we made some tactical changes at half-time. But when he gets an opportunity he has to take it and play well.”

Howe added: “When you’re not playing, of course we will have players that are frustrated because every player wants to play. I’ve said that and I’m under no illusions that everyone’s will is to be on that starting team sheet.

“All you can do is, when you get that opportunity, is to take it, play as well as you can and make me think and make me doubt what my next team selection should be and try and force your way into that, that’s the only way.

“You have to train well of course, and I get to see that everyday, and I make decisions and assumptions from training but of course this is a big opportunity if we do rotate the team.”

While Livramento has made four substitute appearances in the Premier League, Hall’s only cameo was during the 8-0 victory away to Sheffield United.

Despite the 18-year-old’s lack of involvement, Howe insists the “best is yet to come”.

Howe said: “[He’s got] a big role. He’s a talented player. He can play various positions for us which, in our current position, we’re going to need.

“I think he’s been training well and adapting to quite a big change in his life. For such a young player to move from London and settle in here, I think he’s done it well. The best is yet to come, without a doubt.”
