Harvey Barnes once again marked his comeback from injury with a game changing display for Newcastle United.

The £38million summer signing from Leicester City scored twice after coming on as a 67th minute substitute against West Ham United. The Magpies were 3-1 down but recovered to win 4-3 when Alexander Isak converted his second spot-kick before Barnes found the net with two excellent finishes.

The first saw him played in goal by Isak and he slotted the ball through the legs of Hammers goalkeeper Lukas Fabianski. His winner followed in the 90th minute when he curled his effort into the bottom right corner from distance.

Barnes had previously missed the last two games with a hamstring injury having only just returned from five months out with a foot/ toe injury.

"It has been a tough season for me, of course," the 26-year-old admitted. "My game time has been limited because of injury and when I'm out there I just want to do everything I can to help the team to get points.

"And those goals there, those moments... you can't really describe them, it's what I've missed so much. Hopefully there are many more to come this year but today I'll cherish that moment."

Barnes missed a month in total as a result of his recent issue but benefitted hugely from the team's trip to Dubai for a warm weather training camp during the international break.

He said: "For me it was a good time. I was carrying a little knock so it gave me that time to prepare for this game and not miss anymore games, which was important for myself.

"But for the team as well, it gave us time to reset and work on a few bits and come back flying today."

And there's a chance Barnes could now start against Everton on Tuesday night with Anthony Gordon suspended. The England international was dismissed for two yellow cards, the second coming in stoppage time for kicking the ball away.

Barnes said: "I didn't even know he got sent off! There was that much going on in the game. This year there have been so many injuries and suspensions. Ideally we want everyone fit but of course you want to take your opportunities when they come.

"Hopefully Tuesday we can get another positive result."
