Giorgi Mamardashvili has admitted his future remains in limbo amid reported interest from Newcastle United.

The Magpies are one of several Premier League clubs understood to be monitoring the goalkeeper. Eddie Howe suffered problems between the sticks throughout the 2023-24 campaign following Nick Pope’s shoulder injury.

Martin Dubravka stepped up and Newcastle’s form suffered, with 46 goals conceded in 24 games. Loris Karius was drafted in four one of those fixtures - which saw Arsenal batter the Magpies 4-0.

The German is expected to leave when his contract runs out next month, leaving Newcastle a goalkeeper short. Mark Gillespie has been retained as a backup but, with Nick Pope’s injury and Martin Dubravka showing signs of decline, another shot-stopper is needed.

Many have backed the Magpies to bring in an extra cover goalie but reports suggest Howe will target someone who can fight for a first-team place. Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale has been linked with a St James’ Park switch in recent weeks.

Likewise, Spanish outlets claim Newcastle are weighing up an approach for Valencia star Mamardashvili. Valued at €35milion, the 23-year-old is a modern-day goalkeeper, capable of playing out from the back.

He would be considered a game-changing signing for Howe’s team - similar to Ederson and Alisson at Manchester City and Liverpool. Speaking to Marca, Mamardashvili stayed coy on his future ahead of Euro 2024.

“My future will be very clear very soon,” he told Marca. “Now I don’t think about anything else, because I have an important tournament ahead of me with the Georgia team. Valencia is my home. They gave me a football career.

“My transfer to Bayern was almost done last summer. My agent visited Munich with my father to look for a house. But as far as I know, they refused to pay €35million for me.”
