Eddie Howe shared an “emotional moment” with his Newcastle United players and staff following the 2-1 victory at Burnley on Sunday.

The Magpies ended their 2021/22 Premier League campaign on a high after a brace from Callum Wilson fired the club to an 11th-placed finish.

United were in the relegation zone when Howe took charge in November and in many ways looked destined for the drop.

To finish two points off the top 10, despite not winning any of their opening 14 matches, outlines what an incredible job Howe has done.

A visit to the North West on the final day could easily have been a relegation decider but the 38 points picked up in 2022, a return bettered only by Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham, saw United power their way to safety.

And before Howe’s staff and players headed off for a well-deserved break, the Magpies head coach made a point to thank them inside the dressing room at Turf Moor.

“It was quite an emotional moment, actually,” Howe said. “It was just a big thank you from me to them for everything they’ve given the team, the club. A big thank you to the staff as well as it’s been a real team effort.

“The unity and togetherness we had is something that’s been great to be a part of. I’ve felt privileged to lead the team.

There are some incredible characters in the changing room today and through the season.

“It was a very special moment.”
