Newcastle United are aiming to go one better in the Carabao Cup this season after reaching the final of last season’s competition at Wembley.

Magpies supporters travelled to London in their droves but it was Manchester United who celebrated as they claimed a 2-0 victory to clinch the first piece of silverware from the 2022-23 season.

Eddie Howe’s side face more Manchester opposition in their third round tie on Wednesday night as they host Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at St James’ Park. Howe’s men will go into the game brimming with confidence after thumping Sheffield United 8-0 in their latest Premier League outing.

City beat Nottingham Forest ahead of their trip to Newcastle but will be without key midfielder Rodri who was sent off for violent conduct early in the second half.

Speaking about the mood in the Magpies camp following their win, Howe said on Tuesday: “Initially, the feeling in the dressing room was very good. The atmosphere I think has always been good around the group, spirits are high.

“But I think nothing can replicate scoring goals, feeling good about the team. Different goalscorers as well which is a great thing to see, we’re not relying on one person.

“I think the team functioned really well, I thought there was a confidence and a really nice rhythm. Long may that continue. You score eight in one game, you hope we haven’t used all our goals up! It was great to see.”

The fourth round of the Carabao Cup awaits if Newcastle can overcome City and here’s all you need to know about the draw if the Magpies make it into the hat.
