Eddie Howe celebrated his first year in charge of Newcastle United as his side prepared for their Carabao Cup third round tie against Crystal Palace.

The former Bournemouth manager began the processs of instigating a change in fortunes at St James Park with a 3-3 home draw with Brentford - although Howe was forced to watch evens unfold from afar after returning a positive Covid-19 test 24 hours before the game. Slowly, but surely, the hard work and dedication of the Magpies boss and his coaching staff began to pay off, and further aided by some impressive additions in the January transfer window, United began to move away from the relegation zone and had secured a mid-table finish by the time the Premier League season came to a close.

Preparations for Howe’s first full season in charge saw long-term transfer targets Alexander Isak and Sven Botman move to St James Park along with England goalkeeper Nick Pope. The January loan deal for Aston Villa defender Matt Targett was also converted into a permanent switch.

An unexpectedly impressive start to the Premier League season has seen the momentum built up over the second-half of last season continue and Sunday’s 4-1 win at Southampton has guarenteed Howe’s side will head into the World Cup break sat in a Champions League place.
