‘You gave us…’ - Alan Shearer drops immediate reaction to Eddie Howe leaving Newcastle United

Alan Shearer has given his imediate reaction to Eddie Howe leaving Newcastle United.

Alan Shearer has thanked Eddie Howe following his shock Newcastle United departure.

Bombshell news has emerged this morning that Howe is set to walk away as Magpies manager. As it stands, the club are yet to make an official announcement - but NewcastleWorld understands his four-and-a-half years in charge has come to an end.

Howe’s exit follows last night’s dismal 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City. However, it is understood that the loss at Ashton Gate had little reflection on the decision.

Newcastle are now searching for a replacement just 24 days before the Premier League season - with Al-Ahli boss Matthias Jaissle the favourite to take charge. Shearer had been a vocal advocate for Howe continuing as head coach ahead of the new campaign.

Alan Shearer reacts

Shearer kept it short and sweet on X - posting “Thank you Eddie. You gave us this day.” He referenced the Carabao Cup final triumph over Liverpool that ended Newcastle’s 70-year domestic trophy drought.

‘Rocky couple of years’ - Alan Shearer

Speaking a fortnight ago, Shearer aired his frustrations at Newcastle losing top stars like Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali - with Bruno Guimaraes also likely to leave. He said: "I just think from a Newcastle fan point of view that you've lost your best player last year in terms of (Alexander) Isak for whatever reason.

“You've lost Anthony Gordon for whatever reason. You've lost Tonali for whatever reason. And clearly, if Bruno was to go, then that would be four of your top players gone within two years.

“And there's obviously been a shift in how they're going to sign players. They are going to go out and sign young, hungry players. But that in itself doesn't guarantee you success. It is a really important couple of months coming up for Newcastle because they've obviously sold players for big money and they've got a couple of youngsters in.

“But sometimes youngsters need time to develop as well, instead of coming into the pressure cooker of the Premier League and a big club like Newcastle. So, there are no guarantees. It's been a frustrating time off the field for Newcastle fans at the minute.”
