The weekend of live music is finally here! Very soon Sam Fender will play two homecoming headline shows at Newcastle United’s St James Park, becoming the first Geordie to headline the North East’s largest stadium in what is one of the largest weekends in North East music history.

From set list information to travel and parking advice, this is the complete guide to the two shows.

When is Sam Fender playing at St James Park in Newcastle?

The two shows will be taking place on Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10.

Who is supporting Sam Fender at St James Park?

A series of artists from the North East and further afield will be joining Fender for his dates in Newcastle’s city centre.

Fans with tickets for Friday, June 9 will see local act Hector Gannet, Fender’s label-mate Holly Hunberstone and Inhaler kick off the evening while the show the following day will see North Shields act Ernie, London’s Wunderhorse and Holly Humberstone perform.

What are the times for Sam Fender’s Newcastle gigs at St James Park?

The set times across both shows are expected to be something similar to the following:

Doors open – 4pm

Local support – 4:45pm

Second support – 6pm

Final support – 7:30pm

Sam Fender – 9pm

Curfew – 11pm

How can I get to St James Park?

The city centre stadium is easily accessible by public transport with the Tyne and Wear Metro and local bus services stopping within walking distance. The closest Metro stations are St James, Monument or Haymarket while Haymarket and Eldon Square bus stations are very close.

Metro station closures for Sam Fender in Newcastle

As part of the days, the Tyne and Wear Metro will introduce crowd control measures, closing stations throughout the evening.

Pink will also be performing at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland on Saturday, June 10 meaning more stations will be off limits. The full list of closures according to Nexus, the group which runs the Metro system is below:

Friday, June 9

  • St James – closed from 8pm
  • Monument platform 4 (to St James) – exit only from 8pm

Saturday, June 10

  • St James – closed from 8pm
  • Monument platform 1 (towards Heworth) will be closed from 10pm
  • Monument platform 2 (towards South Gosforth) will be closed from 10pm
  • Monument platform 3 (towards Wallsend) will remain open for travel towards Whitley Bay via Wallsend.
  • Monument platform 4 (to St James) – exit only from 8pm
  • Manors– Closed from 10pm
  • Jesmond – Closed from 10pm
  • Haymarket– exit only from 10pm (no entry into the station)
  • Central Station – exit only from 10pm (no entry into the station)

Trains will run through closed stations and platforms without stopping.

How to get back from Sam Fender at St James Park in Newcastle

Anyone travelling towards South Hylton or South Hylton is advised to make their way to Gateshead where they can get on regular Metro services while normal services will be in place on non-metro services from Newcastle Station.

Shuttle buses to Gateshead interchange will be available across both nights.

The full list of shuttle buses available after the gigs are:

  • Bus SF1 – Stops on Blackett Street (stop number 08nc108). Stopping only at Gosforth High Street/Brandling Arms, Regent Centre Interchange, Fawdon Mormon Church and Kingston Park Metro
  • Bus SF2 – Stops on St Mary’s Place (stop number 08nc76). Stopping only at South Gosforth roundabout, Longbenton shops, Benton cemetery, Forest Hall shops, Palmersville Metro and Cramlington Manor Walks
  • Bus SF3 stops on Market Street (stop number 08nc68). Stopping only at Gateshead Interchange, Low Fell The Cannon and Chester-le-Street Red Lion

These buses will begin operating from 9:40pm, over an hour before the show’s cerfew, which is at 11pm.

Where to park for Sam Fender at St James Park in Newcastle

Newcastle City Council have confirmed Dean Street multi storey, Eldon Garden multi storey, Eldon Square multi storey, Grainger Town multi storey, Manors multi storey and Oxford Street multi storey car parks will open at the normal opening times for each multi storey car park on Friday, June 9, but will then remain open until their respective closing times on Monday, June 12.

Are tickets still available for Sam Fender at St James Park?

Both nights in Newcastle are completely sold out and no options are available through Ticketmaster’s resale platforms.

Will Sam Fender announce a new album at St James Park?

The day before the first show saw a billboard placed outside the venue teasing an announcement from the artist with a QR code taking fans to his email sign up form. Fender’s first and second albums are both referenced on the design with the code taking the space of the title of a yet to be announced third album. It is not yet known when the album will be announced, but Fender has been sharing videos of himself and his band in a studio working on new music throughout 2023.

There have been plenty of rumours circulating in the days leading up to the weekend, although nothing has been announced at the time of writing.

What will the setlist be for Sam Fender’s shows at St James Park in Newcastle?
