The fundraising event has raised over £1 billion since it started almost 35 years ago. Here’s what you need to know about Red Nose Day 2022 in Newcastle.

When is Red Nose Day 2022?

Red Nose Day used to take place every other year, alternating with Sport Relief which would happen on even years whilst Comic Relief would take place on odd years.

Highlights of last year’s show included Billy Monger taking on an epic triathlon inspired challenge, and The One Show’s Alex Scott and Jermaine Jenas braving  tough terrain to compete in the Red Nose and Spoon Race.

The Radio1 LOL-a-thon with Scott Mills and Chris Stark returned and was bigger than ever with more than 24 hours of comedy gold.

The 2021 show raised over £55 million for Comic Relief.

In January 2022, it was announced that Comic Relief would take place every year.

Red Nose Day 2022 will take place on Friday, 18 March.

The show will begin on BBC One at 7pm and will also be available on BBC IPlayer.

Red Nose Day is organised by Comic Relief, a UK based charity whose mission is to rid the world of poverty.

The aim of the day is to take part in activities and have fun whilst raising money for an important cause.

The first ever Red Nose Day took place in 1988 and raised £15 million.

Celebrities including Dawn French and Tony Robinson appeared on the inaugural version of the fundraising show.

Comic Relief was founded in 1985 by Brummy comedian Lenny Henry and writer Richard Curtis.

Where can I buy a red nose and other Red Nose Day merchandise?

Red Nose Day is famous for its bright red clothing and merchandise, most famously the red nose itself.

Proceeds from items sold go towards the charity’s important work tackling poverty.

The nose has taken many forms over the years, including being made out of rubber, plastic and foam.

The 2022 noses have eight different designs based on wild animals and all are plastic-free, this was the case with the 2021 noses.

The noses are £1.50 with 75p from each noise sold going back to the charity.

You can buy a red nose from the Comic Relief online shop for £1.50 or from Sainsbury’s and Argos shops.

One thing to point out is that you are unable to choose which nose you get, as they come in a special ‘mystery box’.

Other Red Nose Day merchandise includes an exclusive range of homeware items available from TK Maxx with designs from various artists.

Water bottles, wristbands, keyrings, lanyards, t-shirts, aprons, and more are also available from Sainsbury’s, Argos and TK Maxx.

Money from all items sold will go to Comic Relief.

What Red Nose Day events are happening near me in Newcastle?

Red Nose Day is a day for fun and fundraising. Schools across the region will be taking part in the day in the form of a non-uniform day.

A tradition for schools is to ask pupils to bring in a donation which will be collected and sent to Comic Relief.

Ivy Road Primary School in North Tyneside is encouraging pupils to wear their own clothes or something red.

King Edward School in North Shields is not asking for donations, but has said children are welcome to attend in their own clothes.
