Newcastle’s Christmas lights have already been turned on, and it won’t be long before the festive season is in full flow, but where can residents find Christmas markets across the region this year?

The North East’s biggest Christmas market makes a return this year – albeit with a slight change. Stalls around Grey’s Monument will make a return but the sprawling funfair which takes up Northumberland Street will not make an appearance this winter.

The opening date of the market has also been brought back from the usual mid November date to 2 December.

All market stalls this year will host local companies selling produce made around the North East and at the start of November Newcastle City Council invited stall applications from nearby sellers.

A wide variety of goods from food to gifts from 30 different vendors are expected to be available.

The market will be trading from 9:00am until 6:00pm from Monday to Friday, with the exception of Thursdays when stalls close at 7:00pm.

Saturdays will see market stalls open their shutters at 10:00am and close at 5:00pm.

Christmas Eve marks the final day of the market with stalls opening from 9:00am until 4:00pm.

To add to the festive spirit, North East company Hadrian’s Tipi have made their return to the Stack on Pilgrim Street. The winter favourite will be at the food and drink site until January 2022.

Elsewhere in the North East, Sunderland are hosting their own Christmas market with a funfair, rides and food stalls situated near the city’s Keel Square, where an ice rink is also part of a packed festive programme for the city.

Hadrian’s Tipi has also opened up in Stack’s Seaburn site with further rides and a similar temporary tent setup soon to open on the old Crowtree Leisure site.

South Shields Market is also hosting a special Christmas edition of the South Tyneside meet, complete with live music and entertainment on Friday 17 December in the town’s market square between 9:00am and 6:00pm.

Moving back to the north of the Tyne, and Whitley Bay’s Spanish City are hosting their annual Christmas market this year across 26 – 28 November. Tickets available online now.
