Tyneside offers so much to so many residents and tourists throughout the year, but there are some ways we think 2023 in Newcastle could be even better than 2022.

1: Newcastle United winning a trophy

Silverware has been hard to come by for Newcastle over the last few years. Mike Ashley’s time in charge of the club is now over and a new regime is now helping United fans get back behind their team. Success on the pitch in 2023 would be completed with a trophy – something Eddie Howe and his team could pick up at Wembley in the Carabao Cup.

2: A regular Great North Run

After last year’s event was impacted by the tragic death of Queen Elizabeth II, we are looking forward to a full day of fun once again at this year’s Great North Run for the first time since 2019. The Coronavirus pandemic cancelled the 2020 event while 2021 saw a new out-and-back course start and finish in Newcastle.

3: Refurbishments to the Tyne Bridge

One of the most iconic scenes during the Great North Run sees runners cross the Tyne Bridge, which could look better than ever this year. In June 2022 funding was approved for improvements to the bridge which will hopefully look better than ever over the next 12 months.

4: Summer festivals

Last year we saw some huge names head to the North East over the summer including AJ Tracey and the Black Eyed Peas at Loosefest although This Is Tomorrow was cancelled. Organisers are promising a return for the festival this year but no acts have been announced yet.

5: More music from Sam Fender

The North Shields singer songwriter has experienced a meteoric rise since he announced his debut album Hypersonic Missiles and Fender’s impressive career will continue this summer when he headlines St James Park. He released a single before his Finsbury Park show in July 2022 but could he do the same again this year?

6: Newcastle Christmas Market

The festive period may feel like a long way away but seeing the Fenwicks window display before heading to Grey's Monument for a hot chocolate and food is one of the best parts of the year in the city centre.

7: Everything on offer during National Lottery’s Open Week

Every year sites funded through the National Lottery open their doors with special discounts and experiences with lots expected to happen across Newcastle this year. The week will run from Saturday, March 18 until Sunday, March 26.

8: Northern Pride 2023

Newcastle’s flourishing LGBTQ+ scene is always lively but it really throves during Northern Pride. This year the weekend will fall on Saturday, July 22 and Sunday, July 2023 with a logo and new setup on the Town Moor which will hold the event again this year.

9: A new site for Stack

Stack’s closure in May 2022 signalled an end to one of the city’s favourite social spots but the brand are expecting a return in the winter of 2023 at a new site on Pilgrim Street.
