Newcastle United ‘keeping tabs’ on out-of-contract Man Utd defender

Newcastle United are interested in a Manchester United defender that is out of contract next summer.

Newcastle United are said to have set their sights on Luke Shaw, according to Football Insider. The Magpies could make a move for the defender in January.

Shaw’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and his future is unclear after finding himself further down the pecking order at Old Trafford. The left-back has spent most of his time since joining United in 2014 in the starting line-up, however Tyrell Malacia’s arrival has meant that he has only made four appearances in the Premier League this season.

While the Red Devils do have the option to extend his contract by a further 12 months, Newcastle will continue to monitor his situation and could potentially look to bring him in on a cut-price deal in the January transfer window.

Matt Targett only made his stay on Tyneside permanent in June, however he found himself benched at the weekend in favour of Dan Burn - though it is likely Shaw will be seen as an upgrade to the pair.

Man United splashed £27m on Shaw eight years ago, however it is unlikely they will make any profit on him if he is to leave the club in the new year. While Eddie Howe’s side could get a bargain deal if they can lure Shaw to St. James’ Park, they may have to make the 27-year-old their highest paid player if they are to match his current £150k-per-week salary.

Kieran Trippier became the club’s top earner when he signed for Newcastle in January, however it is thought that he makes slightly less than his England teammate.
