There’s nothing Geordies like better than day drinking in the sunshine. It’s our culture.
As soon as temperatures peak above 15 degrees, we whip our legs out and take to pubs chasing that perfect Newcastle day. And this week has been the hottest of the year so far, so what better time to share my favourite bar crawl route around the Quayside?
Of course, this list isn’t gospel. But they’re my favourite pubs to frequent when I get the chance to make my way around Gateshead and Newcastle’s watering holes.
The Tyne is the perfect template for bar hopping too, with amazing establishments either side of the river.
Starting in town- the most convenient place to meet up with your mates- we then make our way over the High Level Bridge to Gateshead’s Railway Quarter before heading down to the Quayside. It’s then onto the Ouseburn for more boozing.
Your night doesn’t have to end there, either. While most of these pubs close at 11, town and late night drinking is only a short walk away.
1. Mosaic Tap
Just behind the train station and Centre for Life is one of the best pubs in Newcastle. Serving up craft beers, live music and live events, Mosaic Tap is a must on any beer-lovers tour of Newcastle’s finest watering holes. Photo: Mosaic Tap
2. Axis
A 10 minute walk across the High Level Bridge sits Axis, an amazing craft beer and natural wine bar that fulfils every drinker’s needs. The sun hits the outdoor seating perfectly in the late afternoon/early evening so the perfect stop on your summer bar crawl.
3. Microbus
Okay, I promise this is the last converted railway arch on this list... I think. Just a thirty second walk from Axis (if that) lies CAMRA’s North East pub of the year- the Microbus. Offering up some of the best beer south of the Tyne, the warm and relaxed atmosphere contributes to the perfect pint.
4. By The River Brew Co
Five minutes from the Microbus is Gateshead’s answer to waterside drink. There’s a reason By the River is always rammed in summer, the sun soaks the outdoor area well into the evening making it a day drinking dream. We wouldn’t blame you if you stuck around for more than just one pint. Photo: Google
