Social media has had an absolute field day with jokes in the hours following the announcement that Geordie sweetheart Cheryl would be making her West End debut as part of 2:22 A Ghost Story from January to April next year.

The former Girls Aloud star will follow in the footsteps of ex Love Island host Laura Whitmore, I'm a Celeb star Giovanna Fletcher and Encanto's Stephanie Beatriz in a long line of high profile castings for the on-stage thriller.

Cheryl labelled the opportunity as "a new and exciting experience" as she confirmed the news on Wednesday morning. She wrote: "Hey!!! .. I am SO excited to be starring in the west end thriller 2:22 A Ghost Story !! I will be playing the role of Jenny from January - April! I went to see the show with a previous cast and LOVED IT !

"It is a totally new and exciting experience for me so if you're looking for a fun night out & some entertainment in your new year tickets are available now.... whenever you're ready !!"

Whilst fans online seemed delighted with the casting, many were quick to point out that Cheryl taking the role was about as random an appointment as they come. That school of thought spiralled into many on social media joking about other celebrities and familiar faces who could also play the role of Jenny.
