‘Absolutely beautiful’: Six of the first Fenwick Christmas Window 2022 visitors on adored Newcastle tradition

Some of the window’s first visitors share their thoughts on the theme and why the Fenwick Christmas Window is a mainstay festive tradition for their families.

Keen festive fans who were the first to visit the Fenwick Christmas Window 2022 when it opened to the public on Monday have been reacting to the Clarice Bean theme.

In recent years the window has been based on Paddington, The Wind in the Willows and Shaun the Sheep. The official theme for 2022 is Clarice Bean: Think Like an Elf.

Fenwick once again opted for a virtual reveal event this year, following the same format as in 2021 with a live stream beamed out onto the internet for people to watch at home. A select group of children and families from Fenwick’s partner schools, hospitals and charities did get golden tickets to attend the reveal in person.

Mia Fenwick, CMO at Fenwick, said: “The Fenwick Christmas window reveal is a much-loved annual tradition not only for our local community in Newcastle, but for the tens of thousands of people who now watch around the world.

“This year we are excited to have partnered with award-winning author, Lauren Child, to tell the story of ‘Clarice Bean, Think Like an Elf’. Lauren is an iconic British children's author, and her beautiful portrayal of the power of Christmas to bring people together has made her the perfect partner for Fenwick.

“Our Christmas windows have long celebrated the importance of storytelling to inspire children and enable us all to build connections with each other. We are delighted to bring this year’s story to life for the global Fenwick community in our 140th anniversary year.”

The window will be there for all to see in Newcastle until early January and we spoke to some of the first visitors to the display on Monday to ask what had brought them down.
