The North Shields pub where Sam Fender grew up, worked and was eventually discovered as a potential star in has been named as one of the best watering holes in the area by the annual Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).
The 'Seventeen Going Under' star used to pull pints at the Low Lights Tavern in his hometown and still regularly returns to the pub to catch up with friends and former colleagues. In fact, two of the singer's Brit Awards can be found behind the bar at the Low Lights Tavern.
Bar manager Lynsey Guthrie said: "He worked here seven or eight years ago. He was the worst employee and I've got no hesitation in saying that. He was the worst barman ever. He'd pull half a pint for someone, let it settle and then go mess around on the guitar. Then he'd come back and say 'oh, I forgot to finish your drink'".
The popular pub is much more than its famous resident though, as it makes it onto the CAMRA list for 2023. The extensive list highlights venues selected by its members "as places to savour good beers from small breweries as well as cask-conditioned lagers and world beers and some pubs are highlighted for serving real ciders too".
