Stormzy picked up a Newcastle United shirt thrown onto stage on Tuesday night

Grime extraordinaire Stormzy donned the black and white of a Newcastle United top as he played a headline show at Utilita Arena on Tuesday night.

The 'Vossi Bop' rapper made a long-awaited return to Tyneside on the Heavy is the Head tour which had been delayed by two years due to Covid-19.

On the night Stormzy spoke of his gratefulness for fans who had queued around the arena to see the Brit Award winner and revealed he had spent much of the last 24 months hiding away from fame with his family.

The star looked as at ease as ever on the Utilita Arena stage as he rattled through an hour and a half of his biggest hits and deeper cuts to an eager Geordie crowd.

North East passion reached a high towards the end of the night as Stormzy picked up a Newcastle United shirt that had been thrown on stage by a fan.

The jersey had initially fallen off the stage and into the clutches of a security guard but the star circled back to make sure it got handed over.

Despite his allegiances to Manchester United, Stormzy proceeded to pose with the shirt in front of cries of 'Toon' from the crowd, before putting it on.

He added: "Whoever gave me this, I owe you!"

After the show images of Stormzy in the famous black and white circled online, with many keen to embrace the star's honourary mag status.

One Twitter user wrote: "Stormzy in black and white at Newcastle. He’s a mag."

Another said: "Toon top thrown on stage at Stormzy concert. It’s official - Stormzy is a mag."

Stormzy now continues his Heavy is the Head tour around the rest of the UK, including three nights at London's prestigious O2.
