The Gate in Newcastle is re-opening its businesses this week in time for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee after a recent safety scare.

The leisure complex was suddenly evacuated on Thursday, May 5 as issues with fire-preventive mechanisms were discovered.

The popular Newcastle hub remained closed for weeks as an investigation was carried out and upgrades were made.

During that time, The Mayfair, The Hustle and The Lofts remained open

The Crown Estate, which owns The Gate, said the temporary closure was necessary "to enable the team to carry out further testing of the internal mechanisms that prevent the spread of a fire, to ensure these mechanisms meet the highest standard of fire safety"..

The Gate then announced a shutdown of at least four weeks but is now opening businesses earlier than first thought.
