Tyne and Wear Metro closures: The 8 stations closed for works this weekend

Eight popular Tyne and Wear Metro stations will close this weekend to allow for major works on the line.

On Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3 no trains will serve stations between Pelaw and South Shields.

Metro services will run as normal across the rest of the network, but may not follow a usual timetable.

Travellers are advised to check the Tyne and Wear Metro site for live updates over the weekend.

The full list of stations where trains won't be running this weekend is; Pelaw; Hebburn; Jarrow; Bede; Simonside; Tyne Dock; Chichester and South Shields.

Bus 900 will run between Heworth and South Shields for those needing to travel.

The closures are to allow for Metro Flow preparation works.

The project will see an existing freight line upgraded and electrified in South Tyneside.

Works are set to boost Metro capacity by 24,000 passengers every day and ensure services run every 10 minutes.

This weekend's closures will be followed by further disruption later this year, with a lengthy closure in the calendar from September 12 to December 3.

The Metro Flow project is set to be completed by February 2023 with the majority of work being completed in that closure later this year.
