Weather update: Storm Barra is on it’s way but will Newcastle see more snow?

Newcastle has more stormy weather is on the way, bringing cold weather and strong winds to the North East once again.

In response to the system moving from the Republic of Ireland to northern England and Scotland, the Met Office has issued national severe weather warnings for wind and snow.

Most of the UK will be affected by the stormy weather, however, Newcastle is set to be hit quite hard by the storm just over a week after Storm Arwen caused serious damage.

The wind warning is in place for Newcastle from 9am on Tuesday December 7 until Midnight on Wednesday.

Frank Saunders is a Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office has discussed the recent reports saying: “Strong winds arriving across the west through Tuesday morning, will spread inland and reach eastern areas through the afternoon and early evening.”

“Gusts of 45-50 mph are expected widely, with 60-70 mph in exposed coastal locations. The strongest winds will ease across inland areas into the overnight period.”

Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Brent Walker added that northern areas of the UK will see the brunt of the stormy weather: “A band of rain will turn to snow across northern England and Scotland through Tuesday.

Two to five cm of snow is expected to accumulate quite widely across the warning area, but locally this could reach ten cm, particularly in parts of the Southern Uplands and Highlands.”

Tonight

After a chilly and windy day we can expect much of the same going into the evening. It will be largely dry and clear overnight with any showers dying away.

The temperatures will continue to fall giving way for widespread frost throughout most of the region. The temperature is set to drop as low as 0°C.

Tuesday

As the weather warning is put in place it will be a dry and frosty start to the day, with very strong winds picking up in the afternoon.

Rain and snow will be spreading through all parts of the region. The evening will be drier but the wind will stay strong.

The maximum temperature of 4°C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday

Winds are forecast to start to ease as we enter the middle of the week, but the weather will still remain unsettled with more rain and possible snow on higher ground.

Conditions on Friday look to be brighter and breezier.
